ionic compounds Flashcards
what is the structure called which ionic compounds have?
Ionic compounds have a structure called a giant lattice.
what type of arrangment do the ions form in ionic compounds?
ions form a closely packed regular lattice arrangement
Are there strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions,in all directions of the lattice?
YES
What is an example of a giant ionic lattice?
sodium chloride.
why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points?
due to the strong bonds between ions(strong electrostatic forces of attraction)which requires a lot of energy to overcome this attraction.
why cant solid ionic compounds conduct electricity?
because the ions are held in place.
why can ionic compounds that have been melted conduct electricity?
because the ions can move around freely so they can carry electric charge
what happens to ions that dissolve in water?
The ions seperate and are allowed freely to move in the solution,so they can carry electric charge.
