polymer processes Flashcards
how many polymer processes are there
10
vacuum forming
calendaring
injection moulding
blow moulding
compression moulding
line bending
thermoforming
lamination/lay up
rotational moulding
extrusion
vacuum forming process
- thermoplastic placed between mould and heater
- heater turned on, thermoplastic softens and platen is raised
- thermoplastic moulds over the mould on the platen whilst air is being ‘vacuumed’ out
- platen removed once polymer is cooled
vacuum forming polymer stock form
usually HIPS, or other thermoplastic sheet 6mm thick
vacuum formed products
lightweight trays
takeaway coffee cups
yoghurt pots
plastic packaging
vacuum forming key features
- mould needs draft angle and air holes and rounded corners
- not cost effective for one off manufacture
- best for batch or mass production
thermoforming process
- thermoplastic heated and softened then placed between positive and negative mould
- positive mould pressed into the surface of the polymer so that polymer fits into the negative mould
- air is vacuumed out
thermoforming polymer stock
thermoplastic sheet 6mm thick
thermoforming products
bathtubs
cake / sandwich boxes
thermoforming key features
good for fine detail like moulding in logos
slow process
calendaring process
- thermoplastic pellets feed through heated feed rollers
- feed rollers squash and feed the polymer to make it thinner
- polymer is also feed through tension feeders to ensure the polymer doesn’t sag
- if required, polymer can be feed through embossing/cooling rollers for final details/textures
calendaring polymer stock form
thermoplastic pellets
calendaring products
thin polymer sheets ie cling film
calendaring key features
continuous/ batch production
line bending/ strip heating process
1.strip is heated
2. thermoplastic sheet placed over the heated strip and is softened
3. thermoplastic is then bent to desired shape maybe over a jig?
line bending polymer stock form
thermoplastic sheet
usually acrylic
line bending products
acrylic boxes, shelves, point of sale displays
line bending key features
slow, labour intensive
one off or limited batch production
lay up lamination process
- release agent and resin added to the mould with the fibre based composite
- roller rolls out the fibre based composite in the shape of the mould
lay up lamination polymer stock form
fibre based composite sheets
GRP, CFRP
lay up lamination products
boat hulls
film props
water park slides
theme park rides
train carriages
injection moulding process
- thermoplastic powder placed into hopper
- the heater melts the powder
- the Archimedean screw rotates pulling melted powder through the chamber
- hydraulic motor pushes hot powder through the mould
- moulded polymer cooled and and mould opens
- ejection pins push product out
- product is trimmed
injection mould polymer stock form
thermoplastic granules or powder
maybe ABS, PMMA??
injection mould products
electrical product casings eg
tvs, computers, vacuum cleaners?
injection moulding key features
complex 3D shapes easily made
fast industrial production method
high initial cost
large mass or continuous production
blow moulding process
- parison (thermoplastic tube) is extruded between the two mould halves
- hot air is blown into the parison as the mould close into each other
- parison takes shape of the mould
blow moulding polymer stock
thermoplastic tube (parison)
granules
blow moulding products
drink bottles
shampoo bottles
watering cans
detergent bottles
blow moulding key features
continuous/ mass production
high initial cost
rotational moulding process
- mould filled with thermoplastic powder/granules
- mould is then heated in an oven and then rotated slowly so that plastic coats the insides of the mould
- mould is then cooled and removed
rotational moulding polymer stock form
thermoplastic granules/powder
rotational moulding products
kayaks
traffic cones
children’s play equipment
water tanks
heavy duty hollow products
rotational moulding key feature
mass/ batch production
extrusion process
- thermoplastic granules/powder placed into hopper
- Archimedean screw rotates and pulls the heated thermoplastic granules through the chamber
- hydraulic motor forces the melted granules through the steel die
extrusion polymer stock form
thermoplastic granules and powder
extrusion products
solid rods, tubing
curtain track
extrusion key features
mass/ batch production
expensive initially
compression moulding process
- preheated thermoset slug placed between heated upper and lower mould
- hydraulic press pushes heated upper mould into the slug to force the slug into the shape of the lower mould
- product removed while still warm
compression mould polymer stock form
thermoset slug
compression moulding products
electrical light fittings
plugs
switches
picnic plates and cups
compression moulding features
batch/mass production
