Polymer finishing Flashcards
Polymer finishing
Most polymers are considered to be self-finishing
This is because they require no additional finishing process once manufactured
Most polymers are self-finishing however additional finishes are sometimes additional finishing are applied to enhance aesthetics or improve function
Adding colour in the moulding process
Pigments (tiny particles) are added to the polymer to create a particular colour
The pigments can be added to the polymer during the manufacturing process
There are also smart pigment such as thermochromic or phosphorescent which are added in the same way
Acrylic spray paints
Acrylic paint is fast-drying, water soluble paint that becomes water resistant when dry.
Can provide improved aesthetics and additional protection against the effects of UV light and weathering
Overmoulding
A moulding a second polymer over specific parts of the product
TPE is the most common polymer used
Primarily used for areas of grip and texture or to highlight different colours (eg, toothbrush)
2 different ways to be produced -
Use 2 injection moulding moulds, one for the product and one for the grip areas, the toothbrush is injection moulded then placed into the second mould for the grip
Twin shot injection moulding, this process uses injection moulding machine designed to produce it in one cycle
