Metal finishing Flashcards
Metal finishing
Most metals have an oxide layer which provides some barrier
Finishes are still applied to metals to enhance their appearance and barrier against corrosion
Cellulose and acrylic paints
Paints provide colour and sometimes a textured finish as well as a barrier
Must be cleaned and degreased before applied
Paints must have many coats and primers applied and are either cellulose or acrylic and can be applied either by brush or spray
Electroplating
Involves using a metal to coat a usually cheaper base metal
This provides both a protective layer and aesthetic
The product and donor material are palced in a container with electrolyte solutioon. As the direct current is applied, the product attracts the donor metal then the product is electroplated
