Polyesters Flashcards
Describe addition polymerisation
A monomer can be combined with many molecules to form long chains.
Describe how you draw addition polymers
Repeating unit is drawn in the brackets with the two end bonds extending out
The number of repeating units is written in small at the bottom right outside the brackets

Differences between addition and condensation polymerisation:
- In condensation each time 2 monomers join another small molecule is formed - usually water or HCl.
- Usually in condensation polymerisation it is 2 different monomers reacting together
Polyesters - what do monomers have to have at each end
2 reactive groups
One at each end - therefore diol HO-R-OH
What are the main monomers in a polyester
Carboxylic acids
Alcohols
What is produced in the reaction to form a polyester
What does it form from
H2O
The H from the alcohol reacts with the OH from the carboxylic acid
How do you draw polyesters
Same as addition polymerisation
