Amides properties
- Solids
- Aliphatic amides are soluble in water as they contain 2 electronegative atoms and polar bonds so can form hydrogen bonds
- the carbon is very electron-deficient as it joins to nitrogen and oxygen
Equation for the formation of amides
Visible product
RCOCl + NH3 —> RCONH2 + HCl
Misty fumes of HCl
Reaction between products of the formation of amides
And why this happens
NH3 + HCl —> NH4Cl
Ammonia is basic and HCl is acidic
Conditions and process of reaction
Acyl chloride in concentrated aqueous ammonia
Lone-pair of electrons on the nitrogen are strongly attracted to the carbon of the acyl chloride.
The acyl chloride combines with one of the hydrogen atoms to form hydrogen chloride in misty fumes
What are polyamides formed from
The monomers, dicarboxylic acid and diamond
Describe the movement of atoms during formation of polyamides
The carboxylic acid has an acid group and the amine is basic so they react to form a CONH with the elimination of water - condensation
Draw an example polyamide

Describe and draw nylon
Both monomers contain 6 carbon atoms

Describe and draw Kevlar
If benzene rings take place of the CH2 groups than Kevlar is produced.
It is used mostly in bullet-proof vests.
