pollution indicators Flashcards
name two indicators of air pollution
lichen and blackspot fungus that affects roses
explain how lichen works
some species of lichen only grow where there is no pollution. other species can grow where there is air pollution. so the species of lichen can tell you if the air has been polluted.
explain how blackspot works
the fungus is damaged by sulfur dioxide in the air. so where there is air pollution, the roses are clear of fungus
name four indicators of water pollution
bloodworm, sludgeworms, stonefly larvae, and freshwater shrimps.
explain how blood worms and sludgeworms work
they can live in water that contains little oxygen. so they are found in polluted water.
explain how stonefly larvae and freshwater shrimps work
they can only live in water that contains a lot of oxygen. so they are indicators of unpolluted water.
what does recycling mean
to re-use materials. materials that are commonly recycled are metals, paper and plastics
explain how recycling can reduce the amount of landfill and conserve resources
less metal ore has to be extracted from the ground. less energy is needed to recycle than produce new material. trees do not have to be cut down, takes less energy to recycle than to make it new from trees. recycling plastics saves using oil. reduces the amount of waste that we incinerate or dump into landfill sites.
