hormones Flashcards
1
Q
what are hormones
A
hormones are chemical messengers.
2
Q
how are hormones produced
A
they are produced by endocrine glands and released into the blood.
3
Q
what do hormones do
A
they travel around the body in the blood until they reach their target organs. the hormone then causes the target organ to respond.
4
Q
what is blood glucose regulation
A
it is another type of homeostasis
5
Q
what is blood glucose regulation controlled by
A
insulin and glucagon
6
Q
what happens when blood glucose concentration rises
A
- pancreas detects rise in blood glucose concentration
- pancreas increases secretion of insulin and decreases secretion of glucagon
- insulin causes muscle and liver cells to remove glucose from blood and store it as glycogen
- blood glucose concentration falls
7
Q
what happens when blood glucose concentration falls
A
- pancreas detects fall in blood glucose concentration.
- pancreas decreases secretion of insulin and increases secretion of glucagon
- glucagon causes liver cells to convert glycogen to glucose and release it into the blood
- blood glucose concentration rises
