pollination Flashcards
What is the definition of pollination
pollination is the transfer of pollen from the male anther to the female stigma
what are the different ways of pollination
1) Self pollination
2) Cross pollination
when does self pollination occur
when pollen from an anther is transferred to the stigma of the same flower or a different flower on the same plant
what are the disadvantages of self pollination
the disadvantages are the lack of variation in the offspring
what is the advantage of self pollination
if a plant is not able to find another suitor it can self pollinate
what is cross pollination
the transfer of pollen from the anthers of one flower to the stigma of another
what are the advantages of cross pollination
this introduces genetic variation so they are able to respond to changes
what is the name of the structure that grows after pollination
the structure is called the pollen tube which grows out of the pollen grain down the style
what travels down the pollen tube
the male gamete travels down the tube to the ovule inside the ovary
what do plants that rely on insects to carry pollen have and what are they called
they are called insect pollinated flowers and have brightly coloured petals and prodc=uce nectar
how does the pollen get onto the plants that depend on insects to get pollinated
the insect rubs against the anthers and get coated in pollen
what do insect spread pollen look like
it is barbed so it hooks on
what do wind pollinated flowers depend on to pollinate and be pollinated
they rely on gusts of wind
what do wind pollinated plants not have
1) they don’t produce nectar
2) they don’t have brightly coloured petals
what features do wind pollinated plants have to help them catch the pollen
wind pollinated plants stigmas are large and extended out to catch the pollen in the air
