Pollination Flashcards
Define pollination
The transfer of pollen grains from the male part of the flower (anther of stamen) to the female part (stigma). This can be by insect or wind pollination
Define self pollination
Occurs when pollen reaches the stigma of the same flower or another flower on the same plant
Define cross pollination
When pollen is carried to the stigma of another plant of the same species. Cross pollination will produce genetically diverse plants that can have different characteristics to their parent plants.
Name 4 facts about WIND pollination and give examples.
Flowers have no petals and no scent
No nectar is produced
Pollen grains are lightweight, small and are produced in large numbers
The anthers and stigmas are exposed to the wind - stigmas are featherlike
e.g. grass, reeds, wheat
Name 4 facts about INSECT pollination and give examples.
Flowers have brightly coloured petals and a strong scent
Nectar is produced
Pollen grains are sticky, spiky and large
The stigma(s) is sticky and the anthers are high above the nectary so that the insects pollinating the plant cannot avoid the pollen when going to the nectary
e.g. sunflower, hibiscus
