Diffusion, Osmosis and Active Transport Flashcards
Define diffusion
Movement of substances from a high concentration to a low concentration
What 4 things can affect the rate of diffusion?
Concentration gradient
Surface area
Distance
Temperature
Define osmosis
Movement of water from a high water potential (low concentration) to a low water potential (high concentration) through a partially permeable membrane
Define dilute solution
Have a high concentration of water particles
Define concentrate solution
Have low concentration of water particles
What happens if cells are placed in distilled water?
They swell up and burst
What happens if cells are placed in a concentrated salt solution?
They shrink and shrivel
Define active transport
Movement of substances from a low concentration to a high concentration. it needs energy to move against the concentration gradient.
Name 2 ways that active transport differs from diffusion
Uses energy
Against concentration gradient
Where does the energy needed for active transport come from?
Respiration in cells (mitochondria)
