Fertilisation Of Plants Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the 6 steps of fertilisation in a plant.
A
- Pollen grain lands on the ripe stigma and produces a pollen tube through the style to the ovary
- The male nucleus travels to the ovary and to the ovule inside
- Fertilisation is the fusion of the male sex cell and the female sex cell to produce a single cell that grows into a new plant
- Ovule develops into a seed which begins to grow. If the ovary contains many ovules, each will have to be fertilised by a different pollen nucleus
- The petals and stamens fall away
- The ovary forms the fruit as the seed grows by mitosis
