Government
refers to a political apparatus in which officials enact policies
and make decisions.
Politics
refers to the use of power to affect government actions.
Power
is the capacity of individuals or groups to achieve their aims or
further their interests, even when others resist.
Authority
A government’s legitimate use of power.
Nation-state
A type of state characteristic of the modern world.
Sovereignty
The undisputed political rule of a state over a given territorial
area. The notion of national sovereignty is a relatively modern one.
Citizenship
Members of a nation-state, having both rights and duties
associated with that membership.
Nationalism
A set of beliefs and symbols expressing identification with a
national community.
Three types of citizenship rights
- Civil liberties: Legal rights held by all citizens in a given national
community. - Political rights: Rights of political participation, such as the right to vote in
local and national elections, held by citizens of a national community. - Social rights: Rights of social and welfare provision held by all citizens in a
national community, including, for example, the right to claim
unemployment benefits and Social Security payments
Welfare state
a political system that provides a range of welfare benefits for its citizens.
