Ethnic integration Flashcards
Assimilation
The acceptance of a minority group by a majority population,
in which the new group takes on the values and norms of the dominant
culture.
Melting Pot
The idea that ethnic differences can be combined to create new
patterns of behavior drawing on diverse cultural sources.
Pluralism
A newer model for ethnic relations in which ethnic groups in the retain their independent and separate identities yet share equally in the
rights and powers of citizenship.
Multiculturalism
A condition in which ethnic groups exist separately and
share equally in economic and political life.
Institutional Racism
The idea that racism occurs through the respected
and established institutions of society rather than through hateful actions of
some bad people.
Example of Institutional racism
(1)Job applications – People with “Black-sounding” names were 50% less
likely to be called back for an interview. (Businesses)
(2) Buying cars – Black people are charged prices approximately $700 higher
than White people for cars. (Businesses)
(3) Traffic stops – Black drivers are 2 times more likely to get pulled over than
are White people. (Police, Criminal Justice)
Residential segregation
Facilitated by government policies and actions of
real estate agents and homeowners.
What are the consequences of residential segregation
- Health – as a result of urban planning, industrial plants and warehouses tend to be located in poor neighborhoods. Poor neighborhoods typically do
not have grocery stores with fresh food. - Policing – People are more likely to be stopped (harassed) by police in poor
neighborhoods.
Redlining
Refusal (a loan or insurance) to someone because they live in an area deemed to be a poor financial risk.
Covenants
Covenants are clauses that were inserted into property deeds to prevent people who were not White from buying or occupying land.
