Domino Theory
The forced removal of a minority group from a territory
Ethnic Cleansing
System of government in which the power is divided between a central authority and various contituent units of the country
Federal State
Mass, organized killing, in which people are targeted because of their race, religion, ethnicity, or nationality
Genocide
The study of the effects of geography on politics and relations among states
Geopolitics
The drawing of boundaries for political districts by the party or group in power to extent or cement their advantage
Gerrymandering
The integration of markets, states, communication, and trade on a worldwide scale
Globalization
Argues that land based power is essential in global domination
Heartland Theory
Includes a variety of ways of influencing another country or group of people, by direct conquest, by economic control, or by cultural dominance
Imperialism
Occurs when one country seeks to annex territory in another because it has ties to part of the population that lives there
Irredentism
A country that contains more than one nation
Multinational State
A group of people who have certain things in common
Nation
A nation’s desire to create and maintain a state of its own
Nationalism
A singular nation of people who fulfill the qualifications of a state
Nation-state
Control over countries was exerted through indirect means, whether economic, political and even cultural power
Neocolonialism
Argues that states are born and need nourishment
Organic Theory
Changing the number of representatives granted each state so it reflects the states population
Reapportionment
Legislatures redraw district boundaries so that each district contains roughly the same number of people
Redistricting
Argues that power is derived from controlling strategic maritime ares of the world
Rimland Theory
A region that suffers instability because it is located between two very different regions
Shatterbelt

Sovereignty
The largest political unit, the formal term for a country

Stateless Nation
Occurs when multiple countries form an organization to collectively achieve greater benefits for all members
Supranational Organizations
A willingness by one person or a group of people to defend the space they claim
Territoriality
Organized violence aimed at government and civilian targets that is intended to create fear in furtherance of political aims
Terrorism
Held primarily by the central government with very little power given to local governments, no hierarchy of sovereign powers, few cultural differences and small minorites
