A

1) 1948 - Whittaker Chambers informed the leading member of the HUAC, Richard Nixon that Alger Hiss. a high ranking member of the US state department was a spy.

2) Hiss was interrogated and discredited by Nixon

3) however little evidence to suggest he was a spy

4) 1 year later, Chamber showed Nixon government documents that had been copied from Hiss’s typewriter, incriminating him.

5) Hiss was tried for perjury

6) sentenced to 5 years in jail
