A collective term encompassing both national defense and foreign relations of the US
National Security
A document approved by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) for distributing & applying military power to attain National Security Strategy (NSS) and National Defense (NDS) objectives. The US Armed Forces are the means in which NMS objectives are met.
(NMS) National Military Strategy
Fundamental principles by which the military forces or elements thereof guide their actions in support of national objectives - It is authoritative but requires judgement in application. “Playbook”
Doctrine
Using each service’s unique strength, theory, & experiences to contribute to the larger task of determining the best way to accomplish a task as an integrated team
How Joint & Service Doctrine are related
Fundamental principles that guide the employment of US military forces in coordinated action toward a common objective. It is a bridge between Policy & Doctrine. This gets us all “on the same page”

Diplomacy, information, military, and economy
Instruments of National Power
Military actions to attack an adversary’s information and related systems while defending our own
Information Operations
Team warfare formed from the core of Service skills that effectively integrates joint forces in a way that exposes no weak points or seams to an adversary
Fundamentals of Joint Warfare
A collective term to describe military actions conducted by forces of two or more nations, usually undertaken within the structure of a coalition or alliance
Multinational Operations
Respect, rapport, knowledge of partners, patience
Fundamental of Multinational Operations
The cooperation & communication that occurs between agencies of the US govt, including the DoD, to accomplish an objective
Interagency Coordination
Efficient & effective use of the diplomatic, informational, eceonomic, and military instruments of national power supported by & coordinated with those of our allies & various intergovernmental, nongovernmental, and regional organizations
Fundamentals of Interagency
A fluctuating guidance that is directive or instructive, stating what is to be accomplished. They change due to changes in national leadership, political considerations, or for fiscal reasons. It can originate from the President or SecDef. They originate from the current administration’s world image.
Policy
Defines how operations should be conducted to accomplish national Policy objectives.
Strategy
Chaired by the President. It’s the President’s principle forum for considering national security & foreign policy matters with his senior national security advisors and cabinet officials.
(NSC) National Security Council
Gives our national agencies guidance of what is iportant to our nationa, and gives our nation as well as other nations an idea of how our instruments of national power will be used based on the world situation at the time.
(NSS) National Security Strategy
SecDef can but is not mandated to create it which outlines the DoD approach to implemnt the President’s NSS.
(NDS) National Defense Strategy
The use of creative thinking by commanders & staffs to design strategies, campaigns, and major operations & organize & employ military forces.
Operational Art
Logistics, technology are elements a commander may have some degree of control over
Operational Art elements
political systems, physical environment, leadership are exmples of some elements commanders have no control over
Contextual elements
Given a policy (what is to be accomplished, the Commander considers Doctrine (best way to accomplish a task). The Commander also uses their knowledge, experience & skills (Operational Art) and considers Contextual Elements (things they can’t control) to decide on how to accomplish a task. The result is a Strategy.
PROCESS SUMMARY
The conception & construction of the framework that underpins a joint operational plan and its subsequent execution.
Operational Design
The principle instrument for engaging with other states & foreign groups to advance US values, interests, & objectives.
Diplomacy
Success in military operations depends on collecting & integrating essential information while denying it to the enemy. The media is a manifestation of this power.
Information
This power is responsible for a wide range of activities to include financial issues, encourages or limit economic growth, etc.
Economy
Last resort in the powers to be used.
Military
The level of war at which a nation, often as a member of a group of nations, determines national or multinational strategic security objectives & guidance, & develops & uses national resources to achieve these objectives.
Strategic Level of War
The level of war at which battles and engagements are planned & executed to achieve military objectives assigned to tactical units or task forces
Tactical Level of War
The level of war at which campaigns & major operations are planned, conducted, and sustained to achieve strategic objectives within theaters or other operational areas
Operational Level of War
Security, Prosperity, Universal values, and an International Order advanced by US leadership
Enduring Interests
Operations conducted by forces of 2 or more nations.Aka. Combined Ops
Multinational Operations
Respect, Rapport, Knowledge of partners, & Patience
