A

Tithings - groupd of 10 responsible for each other, used hue and cry (hunt for criminal).
Unpaid officers - would catch beggars/petty crime.
Thief takers - hanged theives from rival gangs
Justices of peace - landowners, dealt with less serious offences, met at least four times a year.

Bow Street Runners - tracked down criminals to send to court.
Robert Peel 1829 - set up first police force in London

A

Government worried about protest and revolution (French Revolution).
Growth of cities - hard for constables to deal with crime.
Constables/watchmen only part time, only had post a year

Policing in the 1900s (4 points)

A

Motor transport - can reach places faster, however less police on streets.
More weapons eg guns - can deal with more crimes eg armed robbery.
Crime detection - more technology eg blood analysis, easier to detect/find criminals.
Communication - can be contacted, reach crime scenes quickly.
Organisation - Women police officers, specific groups eg. bomb squad for new crimes.

A

They thought it would cost too much (rise in taxes).
It would affect their freedom.
Crime needed to be controlled by harsh punishments.
