Generally adopted by the board of a senior governance body within an organisation
Often have a broader focus (e.g. infection control trust policy)
Protocols
Developed and adopted by senior executive officers. Often have a narrower focus (e.g. post Ct biopsy chest x-rat protocol)
Clinical guidelines
Recommend how healthcare professionals should care for people with specific clinical circumstances. Can provide information and advice on prevention, diagnosis, treatment and longer term management of patients.

Risk factors for adults
- GCS score of 12 or less on initial assessment in A&E
- GCS score of less than 15, 2 hrs after injury
- suspected open of depressed skull fracture
- any sign of basal skull fracture
- post traumatic seizure
- focal neurological deficit
- more than 1 episode of vomiting
