POINT OF VIEW HANDOUT Flashcards
How a story is presented to the reader; determines exactly how much the reader is allowed into the minds of the characters
POINT OF VIEW
What are the two types of First Person narrators?
Major (Protagonist) and Minor (Witness/Observer) character
Greater sense of intimacy; may be biased - ego trip; cannot kill them
MAJOR CHARACTER FIRST PERSON
Keeps the main character at a distance; sometimes steals the show; hard for them to always be where the protagonist is
MINOR CHARACTER FIRST PERSON
What are the three types of Third Person narrators?
Omniscient (all minds), Limited Omniscient (one mind), and Objective/Dramatic Objective (no minds)
All knowing; sees into the minds of all the characters (knows the thoughts and feelings); unlimited freedom
OMNISCIENT THIRD PERSON
Focus on only one character (major or minor)
LIMITED OMNISCIENT THRID PERSON
“Fly on the wall”; author sets the scene, then leaves the characters there to speak to each other; what we learn about the characters is through the things they say; plays/dramas
OBJECTIVE/DRAMATIC OBJECTIVE THIRD PERSON
Someone who tells the story, whether in the story or outside of the story
NARRATOR
