EXPOSITION (SITUATION)
Key element in plot; provides interest, suspense, and tension for the story
CONFLICT
Struggle against forces of nature: weather, animals, and other people
PHYSICAL CONFLICT
Struggle against fate (life’s not fair)
CLASSICAL CONFLICT
Struggles against peers and the world
SOCIAL CONFLICT
Hero and villain (right versus wrong; good versus bad)
ROMANTIC CONFLICT
Struggle taking place in the character’s mind; at times the struggle of the writer’s own soul
PSYCHOLOGICAL CONFLICT
principle person who strives (does not necessarily have to be brave or virtuous)
PROTAGONIST
Rival or opponent to the protagonist
ANTAGONIST
Provides suspense, foreshadowing, and crisis for the story and the readers
RISING ACTION
Pleasurable anxiety that heightens our attention to the story
SUSPENSE
Indication of events to come
FORESHADOWING
Moment of high tension
CRISIS
Moment of greatest tension
CLIMAX
