A foot or unit of poetry consisting of two light syllables followed by a single stressed syllable
Anapest
Repeating consonant sound in close proximity to others or beginning several words with the same vowel sound
Alliteration
Repeating identical or similar vowels in nearby words
Assonance
Unrhymed lines of ten syllables each with the even numbered syllables bearing the accents
Blank verse
A special type of alliteration in which the repeated patterns of consonants is marked by changes in the intervening vowels (the final consonants of the stressed syllables match each other but the vowels differ)
Consonance
A three syllable foot consisting of a heavy stress and two light stresses
Dactyl
Rhyming two words in which the last word at the end of each verse is the word that rhymes
End rhyme
Rhyming two words in which both the consonant sounds and vowel sounds match to create a rhyme
Exact rhyme
A basic unit of meter consisting of a set number of strong stresses and light stresses
Foot
Two successive rhyming lines of iambic pentameter
Heroic couplet
A unit or foot of poetry that consists of a lightly stressed syllable followed by a heavily stressed syllable
Iamb
A poetic device in which a word in the middle of a line rhymes with a word at the end of the same metrical line
Internal rhyme
A recognizable though varying pattern of stressed syllables alternating with syllables of less stress
Meter
The use of sounds that are similar to the noise they represent
