What is an ode?
A
An ode is a formal lyrical poem addressed to something inanimate as though it had life, or to a person who is absent or dead as though they were present.

History of the Ode in Ancient Greece
A
The original greek ode was in 3 sections to be spoken by the chorus. The right group spoke the strophe and the left spoke the antistrophe and the middle group spoke the epode.

In Greece there were generally 9 stanzas.
English poets chose a deliberate form for their used, but it varied from poet to poet.
