Use of words starting with or containing the same letter or sound. The furrow followed free.
Alliteration
Any reference to biblical, historical, mythological, scientific event, character or place
Allusion
Repetition of vowel sounds, producing a half- rhyme effect; also called a vowel rhyme. Slow progress over the cold plateau.
Assonance
An expression in which contrasting ideas are carefully balanced. More haste, less speed.
Antithesis
An old-fashioned direct address to an abstract or dead person or a thing. O Freedom, Hear our cry!
Apostrophe
Omission of conjunctions. I came, i saw, i conquered.
Asyndeton
A repetition of the final consonant sounds, slant rhyme
Consonance
Ommission of words, or sudden breaking off in mid sentence , for dramatic effect. The door opened, and….
Ellipsis
An inoffensive expression used in place of a sharper or more explicit one, such as to pass away for to die
Euphemism
Exaggeration or overstatement for emphasis; I could eat a horse
Hyperbole
The contrast between what is expected or what appears to be
Irony
Comparison that is implied rather than stated, eg, wolfing your lunch, monkeying around
Metaphor
Figure of speech based on association in which the name of a thing is substituted for something which represents it, guts, wheel, bench
Metonymy
Uses a word that imitates the sound it denotes
Onomatopoeia
Seeming self contradiction, sweet nemesis, gentle strength
