What is a rhyming couplet?
two consecutive lines that rhyme
What is caesura?
Punctuation in the middle of a line/ stanza/ sentece
What is a proper noun?
A person/ name
What is a concrete noun?
Anything you can engage with using the 5 senses
What is an abstract noun?
Anything you cannot engage with using the 5 senses
What is a conjuntion?
A word that connects two sentences
What is onomatopeia?
A word that sounds like what it is e.g. boom/ bang/ woosh
What is a plosive alliteration?
An alliteration using the 4 plosive constonants, b, p, g & k - words that cause air to be completely blocked by mouth movements
What is assonance?
Repition of vowel sounds
What is sibilance?
Alliteration using ‘s’ sounds
What is a sonnet?
A poem with a controlled rhyme scheme ending with a rhyming couplet that is 14 lines - sounds like heartbeat, generic love poem
What is enjambment?
When a sentence goes over multiple lines of poetry
What is a hyperbole?
exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally
What is a denotation?
The literal meaning of a word
What is a connotation?
A word with multiple/ double meaning
What is an oxymoron?
Placing two opposite words together/ words that juxtapose eachother e.g. warm ice
What is an imperative?
The word at a beginning of a sentence to make it an instruction
What is a modal verb?
A degree of certainty e.g. must, should, could
What is a 3 line stanza called?
Tercet
What is a 4 line stanza called?
Quatrain
What is a 5 line stanza called?
Quintet
What is a 2 line stanza called?
Couplet
What is a 6 line stanza called?
