Stanza
Chunk meaning & may reflect a repetitive structure
The space between stanzas is a cue to the reader to pause.
Rhythm
The poem’s sounds and meter sue the reader as to the pace and timing of the poem. The beat is often combined with rhyme, which can cue pronunciation.
Repetition
A form of emphasis and can be one word, one image, one line, or an entire refrain.
It can also emerge in the form of theme or repeated idea.
Rhyme
A sound device that cues the reader to the connection between the meaning, sound and rhythm.
Makes a poem able to be more easily memorized.
Punctuation
Cues the reader to pause (or not), and where to do so.
It cues voice inflection and control, pace and emphasis of certain words, lines and verses for meaning.
Font
Adds visual feature to the poem that emphasizes certain words, ideas and images.

Line Breaks
The length of a line and where it is broken will affect meaning and emphasize certain aspects.
He led them down the streets of town
Right to the traffic cop
And he only paused a moment when
He heard him holler
STOP
Enjambment
It is where the meaning of one line is continued on to the next.
Your absence runs through me like
thread through a needle.
Language Register
Will cue the reader as to the level of seriousness of a poem or its contents.
Dialect
Provides sues as to the speaker of the poem, his or her perspective, and time and setting.
