Satire
Usually ridicules some human folly or vice by exaggerating to the point of ridiculousness.
Exposes the problem with humanity or society, but leaves the audience to decide how to correct it on its own
Has a serious, dark edge to it
Parody
Closely mimics a serious or original work.
Usually some quirk or recognizable feature is exaggerated.
Purpose is to entertain.
Irony
The opposite is said to what is meant.
The difference between our expectations and reality
ex. a firefighter’s home burns to the ground.
Theme
The message the author is trying to reveal to the reader.
Theme Statements
Truths about human nature.
Worded generally and neutrally. Readers need to make a general observation about the human condition based on the actions ad behaviours of the characters in the story
They are not always positive.
