P.N.S.- Spinal Cord Flashcards
What is the anterior median fissure?
gap/line running down the front of the spinal cord
What is the conus medullaris?
tapered inferior end of the spinal cord; “conus=cone”
What is the cauda equina?
“horse’s tail”
bundle of spinal nerves and roots w/in the vert. canal which originates in the conus medullaris
What is gray matter?
unmyelinated axons located in the inner portion of the spinal cord
What is included in the gray matter?
ventral horn lateral horn dorsal horn gray commissure central canal
What is a ventral horn?
a ventral horn is the anterior region of gray matter
What is a lateral horn?
a lateral horn is towards the side (lateral) region of gray matter
What is a dorsal horn?
a dorsal horn is the posterior region of gray matter
What is the gray commissure?
It is the area where neurons cross over in the spinal cord; it is a horiz. band of gray matter that surrounds the central canal
What is the central canal?
The central canal is a small passageway of spinal cord containing cerebrospinal fluid
What is white matter?
White matter is located in the outer portion of the spinal cord consisting of myelinated axons
