Q

Divisions of Nervous System

  1. Somatic: sensory and motor
  2. Visceral: sensory and motor
A
  1. outside world
    - senses that help interpret outside world ex: smell, taste, touch, hearing
    - change physical position in outside world
  2. inside world
    - ANS: symp. and parasymp.; body does something you aren’t conscious of
    - body is monitoring info. sent to brain

Q

4 Properties of Muscle Tissue

A
  1. Excitability- muscle cells and neurons; excitable membranes, inside of cell is neg. compared to outside, action pot.
  2. Contractility- heart muscle, smooth muscle (peristaltic waves)
  3. Elasticity- muscles want to be a certain length (they snap back)
  4. Extensibility- ability to extend (stretching)

5 Functions of Muscles

A
  1. Body Movement- skeletal muscles (outside world) and smooth muscles (dig. syst.)
  2. Maintenance of Posture- ex: use abs/back muscles to stand up straight
  3. Temperature Regulation- ex: cold= shivering, hot= sweating
  4. Storage and Movement of Materials (Sphincters)- circular muscles b/w stomach and sml. intest.
  5. Support
