Muscles- types, properties, functions Flashcards
1
Q
Skeletal Muscle
- location
- ctx.
- division
- vol./invol.
- n.t.
- shape
- arrangement of fibers
A
- attached to skeleton
- needs outside stimulus to contract
- somatic motor system
- voluntary
- ACh
- cylindrical, multi-nucleated, striated
2
Q
Smooth Muscle
- location
- ctx.
- division
- vol./invol.
- n.t.
- shape
- arrangement of fibers
A
- arterioles, bronchioles, intestines, uterine tube, vas deferens
- contracts w/o outside stim.
- ANS (visceral)
- involuntary (visceral reflex)
- N.E., ACh
- spindle shaped, not striated (not arranged in sarcomeres)
3
Q
Cardiac Muscle
- location
- ctx.
- division
- vol./invol.
- n.t.
- shape
- arrangement of fibers
A
- heart
- contracts w/o outside stimulus
- ANS (visceral)
- involuntary (visceral reflex)
- N.E. ACh
- branched, single nucleus, striated (arrangement of actin/myosin)
4
Q
Divisions of Nervous System
- Somatic: sensory and motor
- Visceral: sensory and motor
A
- outside world
- senses that help interpret outside world ex: smell, taste, touch, hearing
- change physical position in outside world - inside world
- ANS: symp. and parasymp.; body does something you aren’t conscious of
- body is monitoring info. sent to brain
5
Q
4 Properties of Muscle Tissue
A
- Excitability- muscle cells and neurons; excitable membranes, inside of cell is neg. compared to outside, action pot.
- Contractility- heart muscle, smooth muscle (peristaltic waves)
- Elasticity- muscles want to be a certain length (they snap back)
- Extensibility- ability to extend (stretching)
6
Q
5 Functions of Muscles
A
- Body Movement- skeletal muscles (outside world) and smooth muscles (dig. syst.)
- Maintenance of Posture- ex: use abs/back muscles to stand up straight
- Temperature Regulation- ex: cold= shivering, hot= sweating
- Storage and Movement of Materials (Sphincters)- circular muscles b/w stomach and sml. intest.
- Support
