PNS Flashcards
1
Q
Wallerian degeneration
A
after axon and myelin injury, distal disintegration of axon and myelin occurs
2
Q
neuronal (axonal) degeneration
A
damage to neuron cell body -> distal dying of axon and subsequent loss of myelin
3
Q
What symptoms are associated w/ small nerve fibers?
A
- neuropathic pain (aching, shooting, throbbing, burning)
- temperature
- autonomic (arrhythmia, orthostatic HoTn, impotence, constipation)
4
Q
What symptoms assoc w/ large fibers?
A
- loss of vibration/proprioception
- weakness
- denervation w/ fasciculation
- loss of DTRs
5
Q
MCC of peripheral neuropathies mnemonic?
A
DANG THE RAPIST
- diabetes
- alcohol
- nutritional
- guillain-barre
- trauma
- hereditary
- environmental (toxins/drugs)
- rheumatic (vascular)
- amyloid
- paraneoplastic
- infectious
- systemic disease
- tumors
6
Q
GBS
A
- rapidly evolving ascending areflexic motor paralysis +/- sensory
- dtrs disappear
- MC anti-GM1
- albuminocytologic dissociation (inc protein in CSF)
- tx with IVIG or plasmapheresis
- *steroids NOT proven helpful**
7
Q
Miller Fisher variant
A
- variant of GBS
- gait ataxia, external ophthalmoplegia, usually WITHOUT limb weakness
- normal NCS
- anti-GQ1b abs
