23
Q

Normal LP findings

A

glucose 2/3 serum glucose
only trace protein
<5 cells
opening pressure 60-150 mmH2O

24
Q

What is bright on T1 MRI?

A
  • fat, so myelin is bright
25
Q

What is dark on T1 MRI?

A
  • water, including CSF
26
Q

What is bright on T2?

A

the opposite: water

27
Q

What is FLAIR?

A
  • T2 image with CSF signal inverted -> low intensity

- good for early subtle changes like edema

28
Q

What is the imagery of choice for fresh blood?

A

CT scan

29
Q

What is most sensitive for early cerebral ischemia/infarct?

A

diffusion weighted imaging;

areas of restricted diffusion appear bright

30
Q

Safety pros/cons to MRI?

A

pro: safer for pregnancy, gadolinium can be used if allergic to IV contrast and is less nephrotoxic
con: absence of metal objects, pacemaker, and defribillator required

31
Q

brain death criteria

A
  • patient is comatose
  • no brainstem reflexes
  • no spontaneous resp. even when CO2 allowed to rise
  • no confounding factors (drug OD, hypothermia)
  • can confirm w/ EEG or cerebral angiography
