Psychosexual
Personality development is a balance between pleasure-seeking drives (libido)
and (maturation).
5 stages
- Stage 1: Oral (birth to 12–18 months of age)
- Stage 2: Anal (12–18 months to 3 years of age)
- Stage 3: Phallic or Oedipal (3 to 6 years of age)
- Stage 4: Latency (6 to 12 years of age)
- Stage 5: Genital (puberty through adulthood)
Meaning of the 5 stages
Stage 1 - Oral
- Sucking and oral satisfaction necessary
Stage 2 - Anal
- Awareness of body sensations with focus to the anal zone
Stage 3 - Phallic and Oedipal
- Awareness of genital organs
Stage 4 - Latency
- Energy and effort towards socially acceptable activities in an effort to repress Oedipal sexual urges
Stage 5 - Genital
- Sexual urges directed outside family circle
Stage 3: Phallic or Oedipal (ages 3-6 years)
Preschool
Genital organs become the focus of pleasures
Children become aware of their bodies and those of others; difference between boys and girls
Exploration of own body, seeking pleasure and enjoying a new physical sensation (ie. Nose picking or masturbation) is a normative behavior
Fantasizes about the parent of the opposite sex:
Oedipal complex (boys); Electra complex (girls)
Latency Stage (6-12 years)
School age
Little interest in their sexuality
Encourage the child to pursue physical and intellectual challenges
Good opportunity for sex education
