Tension pneumothorax

A

When air can come in but has no way of coming out causing high pressure in blood vessels. Also limiting venous return leading to decreased cardiac output.

Can be deadly.

-causes mediastinal shift

Monitor: vital signs, (may cause hypotension or resp. Distress) & paradoxical effects (euphoria,rage)

Causes amnesiac effects and drowsiness

Opioid agonists

A

(Pain medications)

  • morphine sulfate & fentanyl (durgesic)
  • used to treat moderate to sever pain.
  • acts on the mu and kappa receptors that help alleviate pain
  • Assess pain every 4 hours.
  • Febtanyl patch acts slower
  • If respirations are 12/min or less in elderly =STOP
