- serum biochemistry
- FBC (would expect elevated WBC due to neutrophilia)
- CXR
- blood cultures
- sputum microscopy and culture
- urinary legionella antigen
- throat swab
What complications might occur with pneumonia?
- septicaemia
- acute kidney injury
- empyema
- lung abscess
- haemolytic anaemia
- ARDS
What is the name of the pneumonia grading scale?
CURB 65
What is the treatment for pneumonia with CURB 0-1?
amoxycillin or clarithromycin/doxycycline
What is the treatment for pneumonia with CURB 2?
amoxycillin and clarithromycin/levofloxacin
What is the treatment for pneumonia with CURB 3-5?
co-amoxoclav and clarithromycin/levofloxacin
When should levofloxacin be used instead of clarithromycin?
If penicillin allergic
What additional treatment would you give a patient with pneumonia?
- oxygen
- IV fluids
