- audiences can recognise stereotypes and can see when being manipulated suggesting this isn’t an issue created by the media
Eg. Hillsborough disaster (Liverpool fans crushed to death, the sun blames the fans, since then, the fans have boycotted the sun due to unfair media representations)

- journalists are vital in a democratic society as they provide the public with information required to participate in political and cultural life
- free press is vital,for democracy to work as censorships lead to biased, uncritical view of politicians and policies
- newspapers that traditionally supported Conservative Party now criticise policies when necessary
Eg. Press have exposed political leaders for inappropriate behaviour (Matt Hancock’s affair during Covid lockdown damaging public confidence in complying with Covid rules)

Fourth estate of democracy
A
- media labelled as the fourth estate of democracy due to its role in protecting democracy and freedom
- provides info from different types of media to help make informed choices rather than acting out of ignorance and misinformation
Eg. News channels such as BBC news and sky news give info about current affairs
