Pleura Flashcards
Describe the pleura.
The pleura is a double layer of serous membranes that surround each lung. It consists of an outer parietal layer and the inner visceral layer, the two layers separated by a thin film or fluid called the pleural cavity.
which layer of the pleura enters and lines the fissures of the lungs?
visceral pleura
which layer of the pleura is sensitive to pain?
parietal pleura
which nerve supplies pain sensation to the pleura?
phrenic nerve
what areas of the pleura are innervated by the phrenic nerve?
mediastinal and diaphragmatic parietal pleura over the domes
what nerves innervate the remainder of the parietal pleura (in the periphery)?
6 lower intercostal nerves
discuss the innervation of the visceral pleura?
has only autonomic innervation for stretch and is insensitive to pain. It is supplied autonomically through the pulmonary plexus (sympathetic and parasympathetic (vagus) supply).
