Plato's other dialogues! Flashcards
In Republics, what does Plato do about love and desire?
He suggests it’s removed - love is a societal thing, rather than a feeling. His idea is, essentially, selective breeding.
Children in Plato’s republics.
It’s all about getting the best children! “The best men must have sex with the best women as frequently as possible…”
In ‘Phaedrus’, what does Plato mention might happen to souls?
If you given into lust, it happens. But then the souls of you and your lover will become friends. Something good has come out of this ‘mistake’.
In ‘Phaedrus’, what does Plato say about desire?
It might stop you from reaching the forms, but having a close relationship with somebody may make your wings grow again. Love is somewhat rewarded, but giving into desire is NOT.
What does Plato say in ‘Laws’?
If you are pure of mind, you’ll connect with somebody’s soul, not their body first. There’s a focus on the emotion of love, not the physical aspect.
In ‘Laws’, what does Plato say about sex?
Unless sex is going to result in children, then you’re giving into desire. It’s only pleasurable if it results in children.
