plates Flashcards
1
Q
The procedures of a Constructive plate boundary.
A
- Convection current will result in the two plates moving away from each other.
- Magma will rise through the cracks of weaknesses/gaps, forming a volcano
- New crust may be formed
- Eruptions are frequent. A volcanic island is formed.
2
Q
The procedures of a Destructive plate boundary.
A
- Oceanic and continental plate meet and move towards each other
- Oceanic is subducted by continental as it is more dense
- Friction between plates causes pressure to build up
- When friction is overcome, the plates slip. Earthquake occur.
- At the subduction zone, crust is melted. Magma rises through cracks/fissures, forming volcano.
3
Q
The procedures of a Conservative plate boundary.
A
- Convection current causes the plates to move/slide past each other in same or opposition direction, at diff speed.
- Due to friction between plates, pressure builds up.
- Friction is eventually overcome; plates slip past. In a sudden movement, the earthquake occurs.
4
Q
Constructive, Destructive and Conservative are also named:
A
Divergent, Convergent and Transform.
5
Q
Describe how the plates moved in the 3 plate boundaries respectively.
A
Constructive: plates moving away from each other
Destructive: plate moving towards each other
Conservative: plates sliding past each other
