Plate Tectonics and Rock questions Flashcards
1
Q
what are the three types of plate boundaries?
A
- convergent- plates move toward each other
- divergent- plates move away from each other
- transform- two plats slide past each other
2
Q
Which plate boundary creates crust?
A
Divergent
3
Q
Which plate boundary consumes crust?
A
Convergent
4
Q
Which plate boundary is associated with mountain ranges?
A
Convergent
5
Q
Where do earthquakes and volcanoes tend to occur?
A
Convergent boundaries
6
Q
what is the lithosphere?
A
A part of the crust and the upper mantle. It is the upper 100km of earth. It is brittle and breaks easily, has fractures.
7
Q
What is the asthenosphere?
A
It is the weak and easily deformed layer of
the Earth that acts as a “lubricant” for the tectonic plates to slide over. The
asthenosphere extends from 100 km depth to 660 km beneath the Earth’s surface
