Plate Tectonics and Rock questions Flashcards

1
Q

what are the three types of plate boundaries?

A
  1. convergent- plates move toward each other
  2. divergent- plates move away from each other
  3. transform- two plats slide past each other

Q

what is the lithosphere?

A

A part of the crust and the upper mantle. It is the upper 100km of earth. It is brittle and breaks easily, has fractures.

Q

What is the asthenosphere?

A

It is the weak and easily deformed layer of
the Earth that acts as a “lubricant” for the tectonic plates to slide over. The
asthenosphere extends from 100 km depth to 660 km beneath the Earth’s surface
