Q

describe a destructive plate boundary

A

an oceanic plate is subducted under a less dense oceanic plate or a continental plate. this causes stress and friction where they touch. earthquakes can be caused. fold mountains and volcanoes are also formed. a trench is formed on the oceanic plate by buckling as well.

Q

what is the benioff zone

A

the area where the plate is burnt up and destroyed in a destructive plate boundary.

Q

describe a collision plate boundary

A

two continental plates hit each other and push up creating fold mountains where the plates splinter.

Q

describe continental rift

A

where two plates move apart and crack. this causes new oceanic crust in this gap which is lower down, leading to a body of water eventually. if an oceanic plate is envolved or a body of water we get “sea floor spreading”.

Q

describe a conservative plate boundary

A

plates move past each other and snag, causing earthquakes. they have a zone of shearing down the middle. tiny ones can be made at divergent boundaries (jagged plate lines).

Q

describe how plumes create hot spots and give an example of one.

A

hawaii

a hotter part of the core shoots up a plume which if it can penetrate the lisosphere will create a hotspot. it never moves. it creates island chains like hawaii.

Q

what are intraplate earthquakes

A

they are earthquakes which happen away from plate boundaries in old continental ones that are cracking with stress.
