Global Hazards Flashcards
Whats a global event
A Natural event or weather occurance, that dosent effect people.
whats a global hazard
a natural event that has the potentiol to cause death or damage
whats a global disaster
hazard that causes >10 deaths and/or >1m$ of damage
whats the disaster equation
(vulnerability x hazard) / capacity to cope
6 variables that we can measure all disaters with
magnitude
duration
frequency
speed of onset
ariel extent
spacial predictability
how does magnitude contribute to disaster
the more energy, the more damage and death
how does duration contribute to disaster
longer time period = more time for damage to take place.
how does frequency contribute to disaster
less frequent, could be unexpected and take them by surprise
more frequent could mean they dont have enough time to recover after each disaster.
how does speed of onset contribute to disaster
how much prior warning did people have, if they had less like for an earthquake then there is more likely to be more deaths.
how does areal extent contribute to disaster
the larger the area effected could mean that there are more people effected and therefore more damage and death
how does spacial predictability contribute to disaster
an area getting a disaster that we didnt expect would be worse, like a volcano in manchester.
what are return periods
the amount of a disaster expected in a certain time period.
