Plastics Flashcards
What are thermoplastics? Give some properties and details.
Soften when heated
Can be reheated/reshaped
Can be bent into shape/ forms
Give some types of thermoplastics
Acrylic (Perspex), Polythene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
Give some properties of acrylic (Perspex)
Common in school workshops
Come in sheets + range of colours
Can be translucent (smoked), transparent(clear) or opaque (solid colour)
Resistant, good electrical insulator
THERMOPLASTIC
give the uses for acrylic (Perspex)
Furniture, baths
Give some properties of polythene
Moulded easily.
Available in large sheets.
2 types- HIGH DENSITY (rigid, hard) LOW DENSITY (tough, flexible)
Give some uses of polythene
Bottles, bowls, toys
Give some properties of polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
tough
Hard/flexible
Can be welded, bonded with adhesive
Uses: water pipes, raincoats
What are thermosetting plastics?
made up of heavily cross linked lines of molecules
Can be heated once
Cannot be reshaped
Give some uses of thermosetting plastics
Saucepan handles, kettle handles, plugs
Give some thermosetting plastics.
Adhesives(glues), polyurethane, melamine formaldehyde, polyester resins
Give some properties of adhesives (glues)
Eg araldite (resin), it hardens when 2nd chemical is added (catalyst)
Bonds most materials
What are the properties of polyurethane?
Forms basis of paints/varnishes
Tough+ water resistant
What are the properties of melamine formaldehyde?
Smooth surface + hygienic qualities, used in electrical plugs/ sockets, excellent insulator
Give some properties of polyester resins
Tough when combined with other materials.
Resistant to water.
Give some uses for polyester resins
Sailing boats, car body repairs.
