Mechanisms Flashcards
What are mechanisms?
Moving parts. Performs function. Used to reduce effort in relation to work. Used in everyday life e,g door handles.
What are the types of mechanisms?
Levers + linkages
Wheels
Pulleys
Gears
Give an example of a lever and linkage
Paint
What are the parts of a wheel?
Wheel, axle, interference
What are gears?
Wheels with teeth. Rotary motion. When 2+ gears mesh, this is called a gear train.
2 types = simples + compound
What are the 2 types of gears?
simple + compound
Name some other gear systems.
Rack and pinion.
Worm and wheel.
Bevel gears.
What is the rack and pinion?
Converts rotary motion to linear.
What is the worm and wheel?
Worm usually found on electric motor, for 1 rotation of worm, wheel rotates by one tooth.
What are bevel gears?
Cone shaped gears. Angle is known as bevel. Transfer rotary motion through 90 degrees.
What is a lever?
A type of mechanism. 3 parts.
What are the 3 basic parts of a lever?
Fulcrum, load, effort
What is a class one lever?
Load, fulcrum, effort
E.g scissors
What is a class two lever?
Fulcrum, load, effort
E.g wheelbarrow
What is a class 3 lever?
Load, effort, fulcrum
E.g tweezers
