Metals Flashcards
What are the 2 types of metals?
Ferrous or Non-ferrous
what are ferrous metals?
They contain iron e,g steel
What are non ferrous metals?
Don’t contain iron e.g aluminium/ gold
What is a pure metal?
Element eg copper, gold
What is an alloy metal?
Mixture of 2+ elements eg (carbon) to make another metal
What are the 5 most used metals?
Iron, aluminium, copper, zinc,manganese
What are the properties of metals?
Hard/strong
Solids at room temp (except mercury)
Shiny lustre when polished
Good conductors of heat
Good conductors of electricity
Dense
Malleable + ductile
What are the properties and uses of copper?
Good conductor of electricity, ductile
USED FOR ELECTRICAL CABLES
What are the properties and uses of gold + silver?
Malleable + ductile + unreactive
USED FOR JEWELLERY THAT DOESN’T TARNISH
What are the properties and uses of iron + steel?
Hard + strong. Disadvantage is iron tends to rust whereas steel doesn’t.
USED TO CONSTRUCT BUILDINGS + BRIDGES
What are the properties and uses of aluminium?
Good conductor of heat + electricity, very light ( low density) , malleable. Not easily corroded when exposed to air/water. Forms strong alloys.
USES- SAUCEPANS + THINFOIL
what is solder?
Mixture of tin + lead. Lower melting point than pure metals.
USED FOR CONNECTING ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS
