A
where a pulse of electricity is used to briefly open pores in the cell membrane of bacteria so plasmids can be taken up

where bacterial cells and plasmids are placed in a very cold solution containing calcium ions, the temp is increased rapidly which creates a pressure difference between outside and inside cell and therefore pores in the plasma membrane for plasmids to enter
