Plasma Membrane Flashcards
membrane’s function
keeps structure/holds cell, takes in nutrients, build/exporting molecules, interacts with environment and cells
peripheral proteins
either of membrane, provides support+transfer small molecules
integral proteins
IN the membrane, transports proteins into cell
membrane carbohydrates
hydrophilic, provides energy for the cell
cholesterol
helps maintain fluidity, prevents phospholipids from solidifying or moving too much at temperatures
tight junctions
water tight seal, very very tight
desmosomes
fastens cells together like Velcro
gap junctions
allows ions to get exchanged between cells
selective permeability
some molecules pass, others cannot
diffusion
higher concentration->lower concentration, no energy (simple is without assistance facilitated with)
osmosis
water molecules move through aquaporins
active transport
requires energy, moving through channels (primary is direct, secondary is using energy from other channel)
endocytosis
absorb large particles, membrane engulfs and pinches off into vesicle to hold particle
exocytosis
brings particle in vesicle to end of membrane, merges with membrane to release
