Cells and Organelles Flashcards
prokaryotic
cells without a nucleus or organelles
eukaryotic
cells with organelles, larger and more complex
endosymbiosis theory
ancestral eukaryote goes into prokaryote, becomes a mitochondria/chloroplast, then the two merge into a complete cell
nucleus
genetic control center, contains chromatin (DNA) and synthesizes organelles
cytoskeleton
scaffolding, support of cell, controls traffic flow, made of fibers that are paths and support
mitochondria
converts energy into usable fuel (ATP)
lysosome
garbage disposal, breaks down cellular waste with digestive enzymes
rough endoplasmic reticulum
synthesizes protein to hold/send out using ribosomes attached, also modifies proteins
smooth endoplasmic reticulum
synthesizes lipids, steroids, and phospholipids, detoxifies
golgi apparatus
packages/processes/sends out proteins, lipids, other molecules
cell walls (plant)
cellulose structure to provide support, have small tubes (plasmodesmata) that connect plant cells
vacuoles (plant)
storage sacs for cells, have nutrients/waste/toxins
chloroplasts (plant)
site of photosynthesis
