(25) Horomones Flashcards
endocrine system
controls body with hormones, for growth, metabolism, sexual development and homeostasis
hormones
chemical signals, communicates with near/far cells
endocrine glands
collection of epithelial cells that produces and releases hormones
pheromones
chemical signals released outside of the body to change another
amine hormones
synthesized from 1 amino acid, hydrophobic
polypeptide hormones
synthesized from chain of amino acid, hydrophobic
steroid hormones
lipids usually from cholesterol, hydrophilic
hormone receptors
receptors that specific hormones bind to, based on shape and whether it is in/out of cell
paracrine regulators
hormones act locally and bind to neighboring cells
prostaglandin
made by animal cells/organs to affect inflammation (constricting/dilating blood vessels)
hypothalamus
helps link nervous and endocrine system, converts sensory signals to endocrine ones
posterior pituitary gland
secretes hormones made in the hypothalamus, oxytocin and antidiuretic
anterior pituitary gland
secretes growth and prolactin hormones, tropic hormones
adrenal gland (kidneys)
makes cortisol, adrenaline, and aldosterone to regulate stress response (flight/fight)
thyroid gland (throat)
makes thyroxin, calcitonin, regulates metabolism
