(24) Nervous System Flashcards
neurons
generate and conduct impulses (sensory environment, motor response, interneurons interpret)
glial cells
cells supporting neurons (schwann, oligodendrocytes insulate, astrocytes blood brain barrier)
myelin sheath
made by schwann in peripheral, olio in central, for conductivity
central nervous system
processes stimuli and sends out response
peripheral nervous system
detects stimuli (motor and sensory)
motor pathway
(somatic to skeletal muscles, autonomic to cardiac and smooth [sympathetic up, parasympathetic down])
resting membrane potential
-70 mV, neuron at rest, more sodium outside than inside
dendrites
gets external signals and sends to cell body
action potential
sudden/extreme change in membrane potential, certain threshold to fire and bring in/push out sodium/potassium
white matter
mostly made of axons
grey matter
made of cell bodies and dendrites
axon terminals
end of an axom that communicates with other cell
synapse
where a terminal communicates with the next cell, sends neurotransmitters to next cell and tells them whether to start action potential
acetycholine
controls muscle contraction
glutamate
memory/learning, makes connections
