Plasma Cell Disorders Flashcards
Asymptomatic (Smoldering) Myeloma
pts meet criteria for MM, but have stable course of disease for months to yearshave 10-30% plasma cells and monoclonal serum proteinDo not have lytic bone lesions, renal insufficiency or hypercalcemiaMay develop over MM over several years
Plasma Cell Leukemia
Peripheral blood contains >20% plasma cellsprimary plasma cell leukemia typically occurs in younger ptsHepatosplenomegaly & lymphadenopathy, fewer lytic lesions and lower levels of monoclonal proteinsPOOR PROGNOSIS
Solitary Plasmacytoma
clonal proliferation of plasma cells that is cytologically and immunophenotypically identical to those of plasma cell myeloma, but manifest as a localized growth or mass** can be interosseous or extramedullary
Solitary Plasmacytoma of Bone
by definition, only one tumor identified by radiologic imagingrare, comprising 5% of plasma cell neoplasmssites: vertebrae, ribs, skull, pelvis, femur, clavicle, scapulapts present with localized bone pain and no M-proteinTreatment consists of radiation therapy1/2 will develop plasma cell myeloma
Extramedullary Plasmacytoma
by definition, tumor arises outside of bone marrow80% in the upper respiratory tract (nasal cavity, nasopharynx, sinuses)also found in the GI, bladder, CNS15-20% will have M-proteinTx: radiation therapymay recur, but transition to plasma cell myeloma is uncommon
